Just a little bit closer...

The dirt under his fingernails went unnoticed by him. He went unnoticed by the street vender. The sagging man gazed out over the cobble stones, empty in heart. He was having a bad day, it seemed. He gave a heavy breath of air, never looking away from the passerby that didn't buy his fruit.

Richie stretched out his arm, watching both the bruise orange and the vender. He itched his filth-ridden around the peel's bumps, slowly wrenching it from under the better oranges. One was all he needed for now. Just a nice orange to go with his biscuit from the dusty bakery. He could cut away the bruised part and for a moment, eat like a King.

Now the hard part...

He slowly pulled away the orange, and put his fingers up to prevent the other ones from falling into the dust. He slowly let them down onto the wood of the cart. He quickly pulled back his hand, and shrunk behind the cart. He held the orange tight in his hand. It was perfect.

"Success." He whispered. Just as the world slipped out of his mouth, he looked up to see the vender standing over him. Richie jumped to his feet, and began to scramble away from the cart and the man's rolled paper. Just dodging the hit, he dropped the orange and the biscuit into the dust on the ground.

"That's what you get, rat." The vender hissed. "Now scram."

Gina was confused.

She had no idea what she was doing in the marketplace on such a great day to go swimming. In her eyes, the roundabout was about as boring as the dust that littered the floors in her house. She fingered the wallet holding what little money she was given in order to shop for weekly goods. Gina looked around, hardly focusing on anything, and finally sat down on an empty bench to look at the world.

It would be better to finish this quickly and go swimming, said her thoughts, but Gina ignored them. It was so awfully boring today. Some mischief would make the day go smoothly. There was a lot one could do in a marketplace... so many opportunities, so few people to annoy.

Stories! Gina wished for the old days she never knew. Large groups of people, celebrations! Her eyes glazed over, Gina stared at a vendor on the street. There was motion in that direction, but the teenager didn't care. Her happy place had arrived, and since Gina usually ignored it, it was time to make the best. How she wished... for glory... for attention?

Brought suddenly back down to earth, Gina blinked and focused on what she was seeing in front of her. A boy, hardly 10 years old. He was familiar, like everyone else in Belusville; not like Gina talked to him or anything. What was his name again? Ricardo or Randolph or something else beginning with an R. Randy or whoever was being attacked by one of the vendors. He dropped an orange and a biscuit, and Gina looked on in interest. It could have been taken advantage of if it didn’t happen quite so many times.

Ah yes! Richard Selwyn, the little thief. That’s who the boy was! He had been caught stealing several times before – and gotten away with it sometimes as well. That was interesting. Someone to annoy? Perhaps, though the little one may annoy her more. For now, to observe was the best idea, and to act later.

Richie just managed to clamber into the crowd of familiar faces, all wearily marching to a broken drum over the worn cobblestones. He dusted himself off, turning a sharp glance toward the vender, who kicked his spoiled food to the side. His stomach growled, and he blended into the crowd, until he was able to come out on the other side.

He adjusted his cap, and his goggles. Sitting on the ground, he pulled his knees up to his chin. He was hungry. His hands were empty, and he had already spent the small amount of money his father expected him to pay back. He wished that he was older. He wished that he had a power. Then that vender would pay.

He picked up a rock, and threw it into the street. It didn't go far. He bit his teeth into his knee, trying to keep from screaming in frustration. His stomach growled again. He had to find an odd job- some way to pay back his father so he could get another loan.

But he was barely ten. But he wasn't allowed to work. But he had no choice.
